An Adoption Story Close to My Heart.
Some photography sessions are special. Some are emotional.
And then there are the ones that settle deep into your heart and stay there.
Recently, I had the honor of providing photo coverage for an adoption ceremony that marked the beginning of a new chapter for one very loved little boy and the family who had been waiting for this day. While every adoption story is unique, this one felt like it had been carefully woven together long before anyone involved knew how the pieces would fit.
One of the most beautiful parts of his story is that his biological sister will be growing up right next door. As these children grow, they'll have the opportunity to know one another, build memories together, and develop a bond that can continue throughout their lives. What a gift that is.
As I watched the judge finalize the adoption and witnessed the smiles, tears, laughter, and overwhelming joy filling the room, I couldn't help but reflect on my own journey. You see, adoption isn't just another session type for me.
It's personal.
Nearly eighteen years ago, I welcomed a tiny four-month-old baby girl into my home. At the time, I had no idea exactly what the future would hold. I simply knew I loved her.
What followed were years of loving her, raising her, cheering her on, wiping tears, celebrating milestones, helping with homework, and watching her become the incredible young woman she is today.
Years later, we were finally able to make it official through adoption & then some time after that she took my husband's last name.
When you've lived it, you understand that adoption isn't about paperwork. It isn't about court dates.
It isn't even about the final decree. It's about belonging.
It's about choosing love every single day.
It's about family being formed in ways that don't always look traditional but are every bit as beautiful.
It's about a child knowing they are wanted, cherished, and deeply loved.
That's why sessions like this affect me differently.
I know the waiting.
I know the uncertainty.
I know the prayers whispered late at night.
I know the joy that comes when a child finally has permanence and security.
And I know how quickly those moments pass.
The courtroom photos, the hugs afterward, the proud smiles, the tears of relief, the family gathered together to celebrate, these become pieces of a story that deserves to be remembered forever.
As photographers, we often talk about preserving memories, but adoption stories carry a different weight for me. They represent hope, resilience, faith, and unconditional love all wrapped into one extraordinary moment.
To this sweet family: thank you for allowing me to witness and document such a sacred day. Your son is surrounded by so much love, and it was an honor to preserve these memories for you.
